I expect that the equipment will be very basic with draw-over anaesthesia; a lot of regional techniques, and of course ketamine. Truphatek have kindly given me some airway equipment to take out with me. While I expect that I will get most use out of the standard laryngoscope set, it will be very interesting to see how the Truview works in a difficult environment..."

"...At KCMC there are 5 main operating theatres, ENT, urology and obstetrics.  The staff do an incredible job. They are expected to anaesthetise a wide variety of different cases. The anaesthetic equipment used consists of an endo-tracheal tube, hand- ventilation via a T-piece for a child and a ventilator (often a Manley) for adults, pulse oximetry  is in most theatres, an ECG, BP monitoring for adults and a very useful pre-cordial stethoscope for children. ..."
 
"...My main concern at the moment is how the changes that I have made can be maintained. I have modified the training programme for the nurse anaesthetists, and so am busy trying to make sure that next year’s programme is in place. Next to each topic I have also put details of either the book to use for that topic, or where it can be found on the information CDs that I have brought..."

Laryngoscopy — its past and future

"MAN’S assumption of an upright posture, coupled with our tendency to live in social groups has resulted in some bad habits - simultaneous eating and talking. This has necessitated exclusion of the larynx from the line of sight connecting the mouth to the esophagus. While this does make eating safer and more interesting, it has complicated the task for airway managers..."

 

  • Reduces difficult by atleast one grade, making difficult cases easier to intubate.

 

  • Continuous oxygen flow at 10 litre per minute extends the window of intubation ;cleans away secretions & prevents fogging.
